Remembering the Merikins: Land and freedom
200 years ago, the Merikins — free black settlers from the United States — arrived in Trinidad, establishing close-knit communities that survive to this day. This special programme of events celebrates their history through words, images, and music, including the launch of a new book, River of Freedom.
Land and freedom: historian Hazel Manning, musician Caitlyn Kamminga, composer Adam Walters, artist Che Lovelace, and conductor Kwame Ryan discuss the importance of recording the Merikins’ story, and launch the new River of Freedom book
