The book traces the History of one of Trinidad and Tobago top Steel Orchestra’s from its beginning in 1950 until the band’s demise in 1972. Pan Am North Stars was able to showcase the music of the Steel band to numerous audiences in the West Indies, South and Central America and in the United States of America. The top airline at the time Pan American World Airways used the North Stars Steel Orchestra to promote the airline and the music originating from Steel drums.
The book highlights some of the persons responsible for the band’s success, the trials and triumphs of the band and the band’s association with the World famous Trinidad born pianist Winifred Atwell. in what was called “Ivory and Steel”, these two Trinidad and Tobago artistes performed a series of concert which combined the skill of Miss Atwell on the piano and the members of the band on their Steel band instruments.
The Author was born in upper Bournes Road in St. James where the North Stars Steel Band originated. He attended the Diego Martin Secondary School and after finishing his schooling, he joined the Pan Am North Stars Steel Orchestra. He was an Executive member of the band and therefore had personal knowledge of the workings of the band.
